The Holy Prophet peace be upon him used to ask the scribes (those who write the revelation) to write the verse those were revealed.
He used to make them learn the verse by heart & used to listen to them & made them correct if they were wrong. (((((eachknowledge.blogspot.com))))
Then he used to tell them, By the will of Allah, the placement of the revealed verse through verses & passage of the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) and dispersed with different people yet each of the possessors was told by Prophet(Saw)
Prophet(Saw) did nothing as far as material compilation is concerent but gave instructions about the placement of each of the verse & Surahs.
